How are appointments handled at The Family Doctors?
Our office is open from 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. Telephone hours are from 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and from 1:00 p.m to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Appointments are scheduled according to the type of problem you have. When making your appointment, our staff may ask you about the reason for your visit. Sharing the nature of your visit with us will help us schedule enough time for your needs.

For urgent matters, we are usually able to offer an appointment the same day or within 24 hours except on weekends and holidays. We are aware your time is valuable and we will do everything possible to honor your appointment time but occasionally, unexpected complications or emergencies may occur. We will do our best to keep you informed of any delay.

If you are a new patient, please click “new patient forms”. You will find our consent for treatment and patient history forms. Please print and complete the forms prior to arriving for your appointment. We ask that new patients arrive at 30 minutes prior to their scheduled appointment. Please be sure to bring your insurance information and a valid picture ID.

If you are an established patient, please arrive 15 minutes prior to your appointment to complete the registration process. Please inform our registration desk of any changes in telephone numbers, addresses, and/or insurance information.

If I call the office to request information regarding my health or medication, how is the call handled?

Your call will be returned by one of our nurses. Our nurses are trained to answer medical related calls for our established patients. If you contact The Family Doctors, please provide a daytime telephone number where your call can be returned. Telephone calls are returned by our nurses as soon as possible. In the event a physician’s advice or opinion is required, the call will be returned after morning and afternoon patients are seen. We will do our best to return your call as soon as possible.

How are medication refills handled?

Medication refill requests are handled during normal business hours.

When your medication refills have been used, it is time to make an appointment so that we can determine how your medication is working and how you are doing. Please call two weeks before running out of medication to schedule your appointment.

If you do need a prescription refill, please contact your pharmacy. The pharmacy will contact us with appropriate information regarding your refill request.

Please allow 24 hours notice for routine refill request. Routine medications will not be called in after business hours. Due to state and federal law, narcotic medications will not be called in after hours or on weekends.

How are patient hospitalizations handled?

Our physicians have hospital privileges at Christus Schumpert Highland Hospital and Willis-Knighton Pierremont Hospital. In the event it becomes necessary for you to be hospitalized, our physicians will arrange for your care to be provided by our hospitalists.

Christus Hospitalist Group provides coverage at the Christus Highland facility. Drs. Wen Liu, Kamlesh Jani, and Henry Kiser provide hospital coverage at Willis Knighton Pierremont. These fine physicians are trained in providing care in the hospital setting. At the end of your hospitalization, our office will be provided the information necessary to continue your recovery.

You will be asked to schedule a follow-up visit at our office after your hospitalization. Please bring all medications you have been prescribed to that post-hospital visit so that we can update your records accordingly. Please bring all discharge instructions to the visit too.

How to I retrieve my user name?

When you first created your user name and password, you received a confirmation email that contained this information. Please refer to that email. We do not any record of your user name or password.

How will I be notified of test results?

Most lab results are given to you in the form of a letter prepared by your physician. The letter will include detailed information about the tests along with any recommendations by your physician. If you have a Follow My Health account, your physician can send the letter through this account. This is the fasted way to receive your results.

Tests performed in our office such as ultrasound or bone mineral density studies will be reported by letter or telephone call.

Your physician or one of our nurses will explain how you will receive test results for any testing done outside our office.

Always make sure we have correct contact information so that we can reach you as soon as possible. If you do not receive results within the timeframe your physician or the nurse indicated, please contact our office at 797 6661 during business hours.

How will I be notified of test results?

Unfortunately, there is a problem with the mobile application that sometimes will not allow you to see medications. If that happens, access your account from a desktop or laptop computer. The development team is aware of the issue and working on it!

I forgot my Follow My Health login information. Can you help?

We do not have access to the login or password you created during the initial set up. Please refer to the confirmation email you received when you created the account. Your user name should be recorded in that email.

What can I do if I need access to care after hours?

For emergencies, please call 911.

If you need to see a physician after our office has closed for an illness you do not believe can wait until our office opens, there are several urgent care centers in the Shreveport Bossier area with extended hours. For example, Velocity Care (http://www.velocitycare.com) has several locations that have evening and weekend hours. There are other urgent care centers as well.

For situations requiring and emergency room visit, Christus and Willis Knighton are available. Please check your insurance coverage for specifics regarding emergency room visits. We do have a physician on call for urgent questions. Contact our office at 797-6661. Please listen to the message entirely for instructions on how to contact the physician on call.

Again, for emergencies, please call 911.

What is the difference between visiting Urgent Care facilities and medical clinics such as The Family Doctors?

Urgent Care facilities are great for minor emergencies after hours, on weekends or holidays when our office may be closed but for continuity of care, it is highly recommended that you see your primary care physician whenever possible.

Your primary care physician has your complete medical, family and social history and is better equipped to diagnose your problem, coordinate referrals if necessary and follow up on an as needed basis depending on your illness.

The Family Doctors has the same type equipment that an Urgent Care facility has and much more! From lab, to ultrasound, diagnostic radiology and minor surgical procedures, the majority of your needs can be handled at our location.

Urgent Care facilities usually cost more out of your pocket too. Check your insurance benefits to determine if a higher copay applies.

Same day appointments are available at The Family Doctors for sick or acute situations. Call 318 797 6661 to schedule your appointment!

When I access Follow My Health, I do not see any information. Why?

More than likely this is because an invitation was not used during the creation of the account. Please contact our office and provide a secure email address. We will be happy to send you the invitation. You can delete the account you are unable to view information under if you prefer to use the same user name. Go to account preferences to delete the account.
